Established in 1965

Our History

Founded in 1965 by Henry “Hank” Frey and George O’Brien, Plainville Machine & Tool Company, Inc. (PM&T) began in a small Plainville, Connecticut facility focused on producing tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures. Rapid growth led to a move in 1967 to our current headquarters on Ronzo Road in Bristol, Connecticut.

Growing Capabilities (1970s–1980s)

In 1971, PM&T expanded into stamping with the purchase of its first press, followed by additional presses throughout the decade to keep pace with customer demand.

A major facility expansion in 1980 added a larger press room, increasing production capacity. In 1988, after the retirement of co-founder George O’Brien, leadership continued under Henry “Hank” Frey and his sons Larry and Henry “Skip” Frey Jr.

Modernization and Advancement (1990s)

Following the passing of Henry “Hank” Frey in 1990, Larry and Henry “Skip” Frey modernized PM&T’s design and tool-building operations.

Key investments included the addition of two Wire EDM machines and PM&T’s first CAD-based design software in 1991, followed by the purchase of the company’s first CNC machine in 1997. These upgrades improved speed, precision, and the ability to produce larger, more complex dies.

Expansion and New Markets (2000s–2010s)

In 2006, PM&T added a second press room equipped for presses up to 300 tons, enabling the production of larger stamped components.

In 2010, the company entered the medical manufacturing sector, contributing to sustained growth. In 2017, Henry “Skip” Frey retired, and leadership transitioned to Larry Frey and his son Eric Frey.

A New Generation of Leadership (2020s)

In 2021, Larry Frey retired, and third-generation leadership began with Eric Frey and his son Matt Frey.

As the customer base expanded, PM&T opened a second Bristol location in 2022 to support increased production needs. In 2024, PM&T acquired MCM Stamping of Danbury, Connecticut, consolidating operations at the new Bristol facility.
